Inspired by artists who use the earth as both canvas and subject in their creations, designers Adrian Norris and Edwina Forest found themselves drawn to the intersection of art, the body, and nature while envisioning Aje’s Resort 23 ‘Sculptura’ collection.
Echoing the earth-inspired works of revered and emerging sculptors, the striking landscape of Square Rock in Namadgi National Park on Ngunnawal Country, also known as Canberra, Australia, sets the scene for the season.
Captured from the early morning hours through to the sun’s descent upon the rugged terrain, take a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the Resort 23 ‘Sculptura’ campaign.
Epitomising the collection’s sculptural philosophy, the season’s interpretation of vibrant hues and untamed volume is showcased by models Anissa Bakhti and Molly Tozer as they embrace the elements; ribbons of wind and the rocks’ raw backdrop enhancing the garments’ form and movement.
Referencing the immense wrapped and draped installations of Christo and Jeanne-Claude, the pleating and frill details of Resort 23 can be seen emboldening a number of the collection’s key styles. Embodied in the Expressive Pleated story, raw cut strips of pleated organza are appliqued onto bubble sleeves and tiered skirts to create radical frills that fan and unfold against the body.
Buoyantly bursting against a soft white canvas, Resort 23’s ‘Vivid Camellia’ reimagines a kaleidoscope of blooms that surround an enchanting sculpture garden. Drawing partial inspiration from the colourful, painted ceramics collaboratively created by artists Simone Bodmer-Turner and Emma Kohlmann, the flourishing florals unfold across corseted maxi dresses, tiered midi silhouettes and flared suiting, enhancing voluminous shapes to great effect.
Exploring a mélange of contrasts, Resort 23 revels in the interplay between form and texture, manifesting in swirling cut outs heightened with raised sequins, crystal beadwork against rigid denim and raw-edged accents, and updated accessories finished with statement gold hardware and exaggerated weaves.
Envisioned through a contemporary lens, updated takes on traditional applique and lacework are imagined across key statement pieces from Resort 23. Modernised through vibrant embroidery and interwoven metal accents, the technique adds dimension to sheer fabrics and cornelli lace pieces.
Capturing a fusion of forms inspired by nature and reimagined through art, discover Resort 23 ‘Sculptura’.
